The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) was setup in 1988 in Pune, INDIA. Among its several acheivements,  one of  the most  important  one  has been in helping the Universities to  develop teaching and Research in various areas of Astronomy and Astrophysics. As a part of this effort, 4 IUCAA Reference Centres (IRC) were set up at different places in the country. Delhi was  chosen as one of the places and it was set up at the University of Delhi in a hall located in the Department of Physics and Astrophysics.  The space and the infrastructure has  been provided  by the University while the grant for the regular functioning and for holding academic programs is given by IUCAA.

The  Centre has a  small library  of some of the  basic books which  IUCAA has loaned.  In addition, it has several other books  which many people have generously donated. Regular seminars are held both by the academic members of the University as well as by visitors to the centre. Several people engaged in Research and teaching of Astronomy & Astrophysics visit the  centre for consulting  the library, academic  discussions, research Collaborations  as well as to deliver seminars and colloquia. Students are a driving force for any academic set up.  The day-to-day functioning of the IRC is enthusiastically and sincerely taken care by a set of research students.
